GET TO KNOW JOEGrowing up, Joe Flaherty always envisioned he’d make a living playing professional sports in Chicago, the greatest sports city in the world. When he realized his skills wouldn’t allow him to progress to that level, he still wanted to make sports a part of his future. Over time, he found out that sports broadcasting was his true calling. In May, he graduated cum laude from Loyola University Chicago with a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism, a minor in Psychology, and received the Outstanding Senior in Journalism Award. At Loyola, he was afforded hands-on learning opportunities he would not have had anywhere else. Over the course of three years, he worked my way up to become co-producer of The Rambler Sports Locker, Loyola’s first and only student-run weekly television broadcast. Between his junior and senior years, he completed an internship with the Sports Department of ABC 7 Chicago under lead sports anchor Mark Giangreco. He was also able to contribute to the Loyola News Chicago weekly broadcast as the primary sports anchor. Television was his main focus, but he was able to gain experience in many other mediums. He was an integral part of the radio news broadcast Lunchtime News on WLUW 88.7 FM. He also spent three years as a sports reporter for The Loyola Phoenix newspaper, and is currently the play-by-play announcer on home game webcasts for Loyola Women's Volleyball matches. For the past five baseball seasons, he has worked for the Chicago Cubs as a Security Services Ambassador at Wrigley Field. Part of his job is to personally interact with other sports fans in an attempt to enhance their experience at a baseball game. His love of sports goes beyond broadcasting and reporting on it.
