Three Common Dieting Myths Debunked

I’m not sure what’s more common these days: the amount of failed diets, or the amount of faulty tips given by “fitness experts” that cause people to fail. I’ll set the record straight on three of the most common dieting myths you’ve probably considered to be golden rules, and tell you what the science says you should be doing instead.

Chicago Bears Full Offseason Recap Part Four: Overall
The Sports Bank | May 30th, 2013
Your team just lost five of its last eight regular season games to squander a golden opportunity to return to the playoffs. Health remains a question mark for many of your impact players, your coaching staff has worn out its welcome over the past nine years, your franchise centerpiece at middle linebacker is a free agent, and a plethora of escalating contracts leave you little to no cash to use on the free agency market. Oh, and you also have a late first round pick in a weak draft class to try to patch up a feeble offensive line. This offseason was a test of mighty proportions for Phil Emery. And what did he do? He passed it with flying colors.

Chicago Bears Full Offseason Recap Part Two: Free Agency

In Part 1 of my Offseason Recap, you heard me rave about the new and improved coaching staff. This year's free agency period brought in a boatload of new talent, most notably on the offensive side of the ball, that can directly impact the outcome of games. How will these new players improve the team?

Chicago Bears Full Offseason Recap Part One: Coaching Staff

There's no question the Bears improved this offseason. The coaching staff got completely revamped, and the roster received an infusion of youth and experience via the draft and free agency. I'll bust out my red pen and report card to grade the entire offseason for the Bears in this four-part series. Up first: the completely redone, offensive-minded coaching staff.

What is the Chicago Bears Biggest Need?
The Sports Bank | April 20th, 2013
With the NFL Draft less than a week away, it still doesn't seem like anyone can come to a consensus on which player or even which position the Bears should pick in the first round. Cornerback? Offensive Linemen? Wide Receiver? All of these might be "needs" for the Bears, but I'll explain which ones are the most pressing and are deserving of a first round pick.

Chicago Bears Hindsight Draft
The Sports Bank | April 9th, 2013
Hindsight is both powerful and useless at the same time. With it, you can make all the right decisions, except far after that decision still matters. Since we haven't perfected time travel yet (c'mon, NASA... or whatever scientists work on that stuff), the best we can do is use hindsight to perfect situations that have long passed. Some of the situations that need the most correcting: any draft the Chicago Bears have had recently. Take a look back at which superstars the Bears had a shot at but never took.

Chicago Bears Full Draft Predictions
The Sports Bank | April 3rd, 2013
Winning the lottery. Getting struck by lightening. Going on a date with Kate Upton. These are all things that are more likely than anyone correctly predicting seven rounds worth of picks for the upcoming NFL Draft on April 25th. While I wasn't brave enough to try to predict all 254 picks, I did take a stab at predicting how all seven rounds will turn out for the Chicago Bears. Who knows, if these predictions turn out to be right, I may still have a shot with Kate Upton...

How Brian Urlacher's Departure Will Impact the Chicago Bears
The Sports Bank | March 23rd, 2013
As Bears fans, maybe we're spoiled when it comes to linebackers. Okay, we're definitely spoiled when you consider Dick Butkus and Mike Singletary are enshrined in Canton as Bears lifers. It was almost a give-in to assume Brian Urlacher would follow in their footsteps and play out his illustrious career as a Bear. But the decision by the Bears to cut off contract negotiations with him has given this love story between a city and their golden child a bitter twist. How will his absence affect the team?

Chicago Bears Mock Draft Composite Part Two
The Sports Bank | March 3rd, 2013
In about a week's time, not much has changed on the mock draft front when it comes to the Bears. Most experts are still predicting a lineman, a tight end, or a linebacker to have their name called when the 20th pick rolls around on April 25th. But some players are no longer being linked to the Bears, and a few different skill position players have taken their place.

Chicago Bears Mock Draft Composite Part One
The Sports Bank | February 24th, 2013
Mock drafts that have been meticulously pieced together up to this point are sure to be blown to smithereens by the time this year's combine ends. But as it stands right now, there seems to be some trends emerging as to which players are being linked to the Bears with the 20th overall pick. I compiled a list of 13 mock drafts from some notable draft experts to find seven different players being projected to fall to the Bears. Take a look at who those players are, and get to know more about three of them in part one of this two-part series.

Which Quarterback Should the Chicago Bears Draft?
The Sports Bank | February 18th, 2013
A growing number of Bears fans seem to be siding against Jay Cutler after another sub-par performance this season. I hate to break it to those folks, but Jay Cutler isn't going anywhere anytime soon. But it's never too soon to plan for the future, and Cutler won't be the quarterback forever. With the quarterback talent few and far between in this year's NFL Draft, one quarterback that is slated to go in the middle to late rounds could be a very attractive option to the Bears. Who is that man?

What's the Second Biggest Problem the Chicago Bears Have?
The Sports Bank | January 16th, 2013
The Bears have ended their search for a head coach less than three weeks after their regular season came to a close. With Marc Trestman at the helm and his supporting coaches slowly but surely falling into place, the attention can shift to the on-field problems. It's beyond clear that the Bears need to improve along the offensive line for the team to reach its full potential. But aside from the line, what other unit is in need of an upgrade in personell?

Meet the Candidates for the Chicago Bears Head Coach Position
The Sports Bank | January 3rd, 2013
In the wake of Lovie Smith's firing, GM Phil Emery has wasted no time in searching for a replacement. In only a 4 day span after that decision, Emery has composed a list of 7 candidates who will interview with him sometime in the near future. One thing is clear, Emery is serious about his sentiments for improving the offense. Of the 7 candidates, 5 are former offensive coordinators. The Bears can spend all the money they want on players, but we've already seen that that won't overcome the problems without the right man calling the shots. So as the great dating game that is an NFL coaching search begins, get to meet the 7 contestants who will try to win over the hearts of the Bears and their fans.

Are the Chicago Bears Better Off Losing This Sunday?
The Sports Bank | December 28th, 2012
We all know the stakes in this weekend's matchup with the Detroit Lions. With a win, and some help from the Packers, the Bears will have found a way to claw their way into the playoffs. If they make it in at all, chances are their postseason run won't be long, or pretty. With their recent play, it doesn't seem like the Bears are even deserving of a playoff berth. Would it benefit the team in the long run if they were to miss out on the postseason altogether?

It's Deja Vu All Over Again for the Chicago Bears
The Sports Bank | December 12th, 2012
If it wasn't for the bad luck the Bears have, they'd have no luck at all. A multitude of untimely injuries to key players has compounded with a stagnant offense and a worn-down defense to bring the season to a screeching halt in just over a month's worth of time. Can the Bears make the proper adjustments over the next 3 weeks to regain the NFC North crown? Or will the recent 1-4 stretch prove to be too much to overcome?

Sunday Has Become a Must Win Game for the Bears
The Sports Bank | November 24th, 2012
3 weeks ago, the Chicago Bears were the cream of the NFL crop. At 7-1 and in 1st place in the NFC North, a playoff berth was all but guaranteed with how well the defense was performing. But after multiple injuries, a regressing offense, and back-to-back losses on national TV, the season has unraveled at a jaw dropping pace. Sitting at 7-3, the Bears must find a way to pull out a win on Sunday just to keep their playoff dreams afloat.

The Case for a Lovie Smith Contract Extension
The Sports Bank | November 13th, 2012
Just two days after a pivotal loss to an equally dominant opponent like the Houston Texans may not be the best of times to throw out a ringing endorsement of Bear's Head Coach Lovie Smith. But it's moments like these that show exactly why Lovie deserves a new contract: no matter who is injured heading into next week or how bad the loss to the Texans appeared to the fans at home, no one on the Bears will try to shift the blame to anyone but themselves, and 100% of their focus will be dedicated to their Monday Night matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. These are all traits that I believe have rubbed off from Lovie onto his players. His cool, calm, and collected demeanor at all times, and the fact that he's the 3rd winningest coach in Bear's history, warrant a multi-year contract extension. And soon.

The Numbers Behind the Bears’ Domination of the Titans
The Sports Bank | November 5th, 2012
The Bears saved their best first half performance for last. The Titans played the role of timid bystander as the Bears rolled to an easy 51-20 victory in Nashville this past Sunday. Lopsided wins like this always result in ridiculous statistics and broken team/NFL records, and this game was no exception. Take a look at some of the most outrageous factoids to result from the Bear's route of the Titans.

Comparing Then and Now: 2006 Chicago Bears Vs. 2012 Chicago Bears
The Sports Bank | October 25th, 2012
The Bear's 5-1 start this season is their most successful 6 game stretch to start a season since 2006 when they started 6-0 and eventually won the NFC Title. The 2012 team has some obvious similarities to the '06 team, and there are some subtle differences that you might not have expected. But here's why this year's team has the potential to be even better than their counterparts from the past.

Chicago Bears Season Outlook: 3rd Quarter
The Sports Bank | October 17th, 2012
After the Redskins defeated the Vikings last Sunday, the Bears stand alone atop the NFC North with a 4-1 record. There are 3 games left in the 1st half of the 2012-13 season, but the set of opponents they will face in games 9-12 will prove to be the toughest stretch of games this season. Can the Bears keep up their winning ways against the likes of the Houston Texans and the San Francisco 49ers?

Let Jay Cutler Be

I understand Jay Cutler is a polarizing figure. I understand he's not the best quarterback in the NFL. And I understand most people don't find his demeanor to be "pleasing" most of the time. But if Jay feels the most comfortable by acting the way he does, why don't we all stop getting on his back about it? If it means more production and more wins like on Monday, LET THE MAN BE!

Statistically Breaking Down the Chicago Bears Defense
The Sports Bank | September 26th, 2012
For as long as there has been football in Chicago, the defense has always been the focal point of the team. This offseason, all the new additions to the offense led people to believe that the offense would lead the team to success in 2012. But after only 3 games have been played, it's clear to see that the defense still reigns supreme in the Windy City.

This offseason, all the new additions to the offense led people to believe that the offense would lead the team to success in 2012. But after only 3 games have been played, it's clear to see that the defense still reigns supreme in the Windy City.
The Bears are Feeling the Pressure of the National Spotlight
The Sports Bank | September 21st, 2012
The Bears have never really garnered national media attention until this past offseason. Thanks to a revamped front office and offense, the Bears became a trendy pick to succeed. Their hype was amplified after their victory over the Colts, but their performance against the Packers brought their progress to a screeching halt. Can the Bears deal with the new found pressure of being in the spotlight, or will they crumble under it?

Jay Cutler’s Emotional Outbursts: Misinterpreted or Misguided?
The Sports Bank | September 15th, 2012
Less than a week ago I was warning people not to underestimate the Bears after their dominating win against the Colts. Now, I'm left to make sense of how Jay Cutler has gone from a confident, smack talking team leader to the team's scapegoat for their performance against the Packers last Thursday. Do you think Cutler crossed the line with how he dealt with his frustrations on the field?

Don't Underestimate the Chicago Bears
The Sports Bank | September 11th, 2012
The Bears were able to turn around an awful start against the Colts into a 41 - 21 romp in Week 1. I might be getting ahead of myself a bit, but what I saw against the Colts has me believing that this time around, the Bears can turn a hot start into a legitimate championship run.

Chicago Bears Season Outlook: 2nd Quarter
The Sports Bank | September 6th, 2012
Depending on how optimistic you are, it's feasible that the Bears can have 3 wins in their first 4 games of the season. Starting the second set of four games against the Jaguars should easily make that 4 wins. But can MJD and Co. find a way to steal one at home in Jacksonville and send the Bear's season into a tailspin?

Chicago Bears 53-Man Roster
The Sports Bank | September 1st, 2012
The dust has settled since the NFL-mandated 8pm deadline to cut rosters to 53 players passed this past Friday. The Bears had 76 players on the roster to start the day, meaning the future of 23 players were in the hands of the front office. Who survived the final cuts and who got their walking papers?

Chicago Bears Training Camp Position Battles: Safeties
The Sports Bank | August 24th, 2012
The safety group for the Bears usually resembles a game of musical chairs, especially with the days of Mike Brown long gone. Week 2 of the preseason set the current group of safeties back a few steps with 2 injuries. Who are the candidates to step up and fill the void for the rest of the preseason and beyond?

What can be said about the Bear's offensive line that can't also be said about a revolving door? Well, over the past few years, not much. But have the Bears made any improvements on the line this summer?

Chicago Bears Training Camp Position Battles: Wide Receivers

The Chicago Bears haven't had a true number one receiver in decades, maybe even since their inception into the NFL in 1920. Brandon Marshall will change all of that this year, but who should fill out the 5 roster spots behind him going into the 2012-13 season?

Event of the Month: Cookin' Up Justice
Hub Bub Blog | November 4th, 2011
During Loyola's Homecoming week celebration, Oxfam and the Growers Guild held their "Cookin' Up Justice" Event to try to show college students how easy it can be to use organically and locally grown foods to create healthier eating habits. We were able to use our new knowledge to make some delicious dishes made from locally grown ingredients, benefiting local farmers (and our stomachs)!

The NFL: The Land of (a Second) Opportunity
Hub Bub Blog | November 1st, 2011
Michael Vick's reinstatement to the NFL has been a polarizing issue to say the least. But he's only one instance of an apparent trend in the NFL: players who have been accused of crimes only to be given a second (and sometimes third) chance to play a game for a living. I took to the streets of Loyola's Lake Shore Campus to get some student's opinions about the NFL's apparent leniency towards athletes who are accused of crimes.

Cubs Reliever's Career May be Cut Short by Shoulder Injury
MLB Daily Dish Blog | May 8th, 2010
The prognosis for Cub's reliever Angel Guzman went from bad to worse this week: the severe ligament damage in his right arm can be career-threatening. Needless to say, this is a huge shot in the arm (pun intended) for the Cub's bullpen going into the 2010 campaign.
